Conservation of the tilapias

Tilapia is the generic name with which is denominated to a group of fish of African origin, that consists of several species, some with economic interest, belonging to the genus Oreochromis. Species of commercial interest are raised in professional fish farms in various parts of the world. They inhabit mostly in tropical regions.


Its extraordinary qualities, such as accelerated growth, tolerance to high population densities, adaptation to captivity and a wide range of food, disease resistance, quality white meat and wide acceptance, have aroused great commercial interest in world aquaculture. In addition, some research is being done on the properties of the collagen present in its scales, which have low amounts of fat.
